Donations Support Continuing Education for Perinatal Bereavement Nurse

My name is Tonya Lowry, and I work in the H.E.A.R.T.strings Perinatal Bereavement Office at Northside Hospital Gwinnett.

Thanks to a generous donation to the Northside Hospital Foundation that was earmarked for perinatal bereavement education, I recently attended the 2024 Pregnancy Loss and Infant Death Alliance (PLIDA) International Bereavement Conference. It was a wonderful time to connect with others in the field and hear from speakers who have studied and devoted their professions to this topic.

I enjoyed learning more about the importance of having a perinatal bereavement and palliative care program in the hospital setting; the father/partner’s role in perinatal loss – how they are affected and are often overlooked; the prevalence of long-lasting birth trauma with a perinatal loss, and how we can positively impact our patients while caring for them before discharge; and the importance of caring for ourselves and honoring our professional journeys, especially when working in such an emotionally taxing environment.

I am so grateful for this opportunity of education and skilled growth!

Terra Education students get hands-on experience at Northside’s Simulation Center

In June, high school students in the Terra Education program visited the Northside Hospital Atlanta Simulation Center to see the hospital’s impressive training facilities. All equipment and technology is provided by employee and community donations to the Northside Hospital Foundation. Simulation Coordinators Donna Dye and Debra Wakeham led the students through a tour of the facility, where they saw multiple life-like manikins replicating real-world hospital scenarios. The group even went through hands-on training with the manikins, practicing CPR compressions, listening to heart and lung sounds, and feeling for pulses.

The simulation center allows Northside employees to learn, train, and build experience in realistic scenarios they are likely to encounter while working. Dye and Wakeham are committed to maintaining a collaborative, positive environment centered on employee growth.

“The center is a safe place for staff and students to practice what to do in difficult situations without real-life consequences” Wakeham said.

Terra Education’s Summer Springboard program offers opportunities for high school students to get a taste of college life for a few weeks while continuing to progress academically. This group, hosted by Georgia Tech, featured students interested in pre-med, pre-PA, nursing, and other medical fields. The trip to the Simulation Center allowed the students to apply what they were learning in a no-risk, engaging environment. The Simulation staff ensured that every student was comfortable, just as they do with all newly-hired Northside patient care employees who use the center for their training.

As the students examined a manikin, Dye sat in the control room to challenge them. In the control room, she could change the manikin’s vital signs or introduce certain symptoms such as swelling, heart sounds, and shortness of breath. In addition, she could pretend to be the patient and give commands through a microphone. With Dye controlling the manikin, students took turns diagnosing what was wrong before treating the issue.

By the end of their visit, Terra Education’s group had gained valuable experience in the lab, learned from registered nurses, and gained a fresh perspective on dealing with patients. The outing was a great way for Northside to stay connected to the community and educate future generations.

Beach Road Foundation gives to support premature infants

The Beach Road Foundation recently provided financial support to the Foundation for Premature Infants. The contribution was made on behalf of their Director of Operations, Shaeron Gray, whose grandson, Graylan was born at 27 weeks.

Michael Litten, the principal of the Foundation for Premature Infants, presented the donation to Northside Hospital Foundation. Their donation of $5,000 is dedicated to funding additional training for the therapists who provide life-saving treatment to premature babies at Northside Hospital's Special Care Nursery/NICU. This initiative is vital in ensuring that the dedicated professionals working with these fragile infants have access to the latest techniques and knowledge, ultimately improving the care and outcomes for these tiny patients.

The Beach Road Foundation was founded in 2021 by Joanne and Mark Webb. Their organizational mission is to empower the Beach Road employees to donate to charitable causes that impact their lives. Each year the Beach Road family of companies pledge 30% of their net income to the Beach Road Foundation which, in turn, issues grants on behalf of their employees.

New giving opportunity will impact the new Special Care Nursery Family Lounge

Northside Hospital Atlanta’s Special Care Nursery (SCN) cares for Atlanta’s most premature and vulnerable infants. Having a baby in the SCN/NICU is one of the toughest experiences any parent can endure, and you can help Northside Hospital make a difference in these families’ lives.

Infants in the Special Care Nursery receive critical and state-of-the art care that is vital for them to thrive and survive. This can be a very stressful environment for parents and families balancing the care of their newborns while confronting many complex medical issues, and often mothers are recovering from health complications themselves.  Many families are from out of town and spend extended time in the hospital supporting their infants. Read on to see how YOU can help give mothers and families comfort while they navigate their infant’s hospitalization. Make your impact today!

Giving Begins at Home & Operation Backpack

Northside's Department Community Ambassadors, along with their dedicated team members, joined forces with Northside Foundation to collect over 41 backpacks for children who are part of the Northside Shares Help Program.

In addition to backpacks, department teams also made significant contributions to "Operation Back," a program that encouraged staff members, families, and the public to donate school supplies for children in need across the community. The outpouring of support led to a remarkable total of over $17,000 worth of school supplies being distributed to six local community agencies.

This collective effort has lasting impact, equipping students with the tools and confidence they need to succeed in school and easing the financial burden on families. It serves as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the importance of coming together to support those in need. Thank you to our Northside family!
